Henri Matisse: Master of Colour (1869 – 1954)

Henri Matisse: The Revolutionary Magician of Color

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a revolutionary French artist who transformed 20th-century art through his expressive use of color and form. Originally a lawyer, he discovered painting while recovering from appendicitis at age 21. As a leader of the Fauvist movement, he earned the nickname “wild beast” for his bold, non-naturalistic palettes.

Throughout his career, Matisse sought “balance, purity, and serenity” in his work. In his final years, while bedbound, he pioneered the “cut-out” technique—painting with scissors—to create vibrant paper collages. His legacy as a master colorist remains a cornerstone of modern art.

    Museum-grade Giclée Prints

We use one of the world’s most popular Fine Art paper, the Hahnemühle Photo Rag® 308gsm, and archival inks, for high-quality Fine Art printing. The white cotton artist’s paper, with its characteristic, wonderfully soft feel, boasts a lightly defined felt structure, lending each artwork a three-dimensional appearance and impressive pictorial depth. This paper produces outstanding prints that feature brilliant colours, deep blacks, striking contrasts and perfect reproduction of detail. This acid- and lignin-free classic meets the most exacting requirements for age resistance and is specially designed for FineArt applications.

Printed with a white border on all sides to preserve the image, reflect established gallery practice and allow proper framing.
Borders can vary around an art print, particularly to preserve the original aspect ratio of the artwork and fit it onto standard paper or frame sizes without cropping or distortion. This ensures the artist’s original composition is maintained.
