The Shepherd’s Dream (1793) – Henry Fuseli – Fine Art Print
Price range: £40.00 through £350.00
Fuseli greatly admired John Milton’s poetry. Here, he was inspired by a short passage of Paradise Lost, where Milton alludes to glimpsing or dreaming of the midnight revels of fairies. A spiral of ethereal fairies swirl in the sky as a shepherd sleeps below. Fuseli hoped to capture the viewer’s imagination with his magical subject. Such striking imagery was often associated with feelings of awe, even fear. Fuseli became known for such sensational and supernatural pictures. A contemporary even described him as ‘the great Wizard painter’.
Museum-quality giclée print of Henry Fuseli’s The Shepherd’s Dream, faithfully reproduced with rich tonal depth and fine detail.
Henry Fuseli (1741–1825)
Henry Fuseli, born Johann Heinrich Füssli in Zurich, was a Swiss-born painter, writer, and theorist who became one of the most distinctive figures of British Romantic art. After settling in England, Fuseli developed a dramatic and highly imaginative style marked by exaggerated forms, intense emotion, and literary subject matter. He drew inspiration from classical mythology, Shakespeare, Milton, and Nordic legend, often depicting scenes of psychological tension and supernatural power. Fuseli later served as Professor of Painting and Keeper at the Royal Academy in London, where his ideas influenced a generation of Romantic artists.
